How many of you have gone bobbing for apples? I can remember my face paint getting all wet and runny as I tried this traditional game when I was younger. Just in case you haven’t tried it, you put a bunch of apples in a bucked of water and using only your mouth you need to get an apple out of the bucket. It can be great fun. It can also be difficult!
In ancient time the Celts believed that the person who first received the apple when bobbing for apples would be next to be married. So it was a bit of a courtship game as anyone who was unwed was allowed to bob for the apples. It is also said that if she put the apple under her pillow she would dream of her soul mate that night. A little different than today right?
Bobbing for apples has a very long history and it you look you can find several more traditions on the game. Another variation assigned each apple to a possible mate. So a girl would choose which mate she wanted by looking for his name on the apple. If she got the apple on her first try it meant that they were meant to be. Second try, they would date but their love would fail. Three tries…well three strikes you’re out!
