Charm bags can be easy to make, and they are a great tool to help enhance the energy you are working with or carrying with you. You may also see them referred to as spell bags. They are incredibly versatile, and you will find that there are so many different ways that you can use them. If you are working with a spell that has energy you want to carry with you, you may find that you can use some of the ingredients from the spell in the bag to strengthen the energy of the spell. They are excellent for keeping personal trinkets, stones, herbs, or other objects that capture energy that you want to work with. For instance, you may want to keep a bag with a small piece of hematite for protection, a picture of something you’re working on manifesting, special, significant scents, etc. The other thing I love is that they are so easy to make. You can have a bag you always carry with you and change out the contents, or you can have several bags with specific energy objectives in mind. I carried one that I used specifically to calm me for a while. It had a clear quartz crystal, some lavender, white pebbles, and a feather that was significant to me. It’s all about you and your intentions, so make them as personal as possible!
How to Make a Charm Bag
1. Choose a material for your bag. You want to make sure that the material is durable, but something that you enjoy working with. I love things that are soft, so I tend to go towards velvet or soft materials. I’ve seen people choose plain cloth, as it is easy to get, and some that are made from leather for durability.
2. Choose the color for your bag. You can choose a color that has special meaning for you if you are making a personal bag, or if it is to help strengthen a specific spell, choose a color that corresponds to the spell you are working on.
– White for spirituality, spirit guides, or energy of peace
– Red for passion
– Orange for courage
– Yellow for energy and positive emotions
– Green for financial prosperity or Earth energy
– Blue for calming or healing energy
– Purple for intuition and psychic awareness
– Pink for love
– Gold for abundance, wealth, and prosperity.
– Black for banishing
This is just a partial list to get you started.
3. Cut your chosen material into two square sections. Put the two pieces together and have the insides facing each other. Think of it as your bag inside out.
4. Sew three of the sides together. While you are sewing, visualize your intent for this bag. If you have specific goals, think about how you will feel when they come true.
5. Decorate your bag. Get creative! I love glitter. Sparkle it up! Draw symbols, write words, sew beads, sequins, decorations, etc. This is your bag. Make it reflect the energy that you want.
6. This part is optional. You can sew the bag closed, or you can sew a ribbon or elastic around the top of the bag. Depending on the material, you can cut several slits around the top of the bag and weave the ribbon or elastic in and out, or you can fold the material over the ribbon and stitch the ribbon in place at the top of the bag, leaving enough excess to tie the ribbon afterward. If you don’t anticipate using the bag again, you can sew the bag shut when you are done adding contents to it. I like having a way to open and close it in case I find other trinkets to add to the bag to contribute to the energy. You can also make a fold top with velcro.
6. Add what you wish to the bag. It can be anything related to what you are working on. You may want to add essential oils to the inside of the bag as well to make it smell nice. I’m a big aroma witch.
7. Carry it with you.
p.s. For those of you who wish to skip the bag-making process, you can get cute little bags that will work perfect for this as well. Just be sure to cleanse and consecrate them before using them.
Have an amazingly magickal day!
