Divination Spotlight: Cromniomacy

There are so many different divination methods out there for you to choose from. One method that falls under Kitchen Witchery that I thought was particularly interesting is Cromniomancy, or using onions for divination. If you had me guess what I could use as a tool to help me, onions would probably not be the first object I would go to in my kitchen!

While I love cooked onions, I’m not the biggest fan of them raw! They tend to irritate my stomach when they are raw, and I am so sensitive to cutting them. My eyes just stream when I try cutting them. However, I have found that running them under water when you cut them can help with this! You may find this helpful for our first method of divination. Ready?

The first method that I was taught was to cut an onion in half. You can ask a yes or no question, or have a question with multiple outcomes. Carve the answers into the onion. I find them hard to see, so you may want to put them in labeled open containers. The one that sprouts first is your answer! Definitely not the fastest method of divination! When I was taught this, I was told that it was an old custom for women to do this if they struggled to decide between suitors. Can you imagine waiting for that? I think that would be very stressful. I was told they were used to predict the weather… though I couldn’t explain to you how to do it. It has to do with the color and thickness of the skin of the onion and how many layers it has. I’ve also seen references to writing wishes on onion peels and burning them.

Let me know if you try it!!

Have an amazingly magickal day!

Much Love and Many Blessings,
