Gardening in the Shade

Many of you know that I love my gardens.  We have a huge vegetable garden, my beautiful herb garden and I’ll be honest herbs and other goodies are being planted wherever we can tuck them in the yard that they will look nice.

One of the things that we’ve needed to learn to work with is the shade.  Let’s face it, not everywhere in the yard is going to be sunny right? It’s nice if you can take advantage of those spots don’t receive full sun.  Here are a few of my favorites that do well in New England.  You will want to check and see if they do well where you live.

Mint – Mint is at the top of my list.  It’s one of the most used herbs in my home, it is incredibly easy to grow and there are so many different varieties.  We have apple mint, chocolate mint, spearmint and a few other types growing in varying places in our yard.  The one thing that you want to be sure is that you have a fairly large area for it or you put it in a container as mint loves to spread.  We have several large patches in varying areas of our yard.

Hosta Plants – Hostas are another plant that do quite well in the shade.  They come in a wide variety that have beautiful green leaves and varied colors of flowers.  These are quite close to the ones that we have that line an entire side of our house.  They come back every year and look gorgeous all through the warm weather.

Lily of the Valley – This has to be one of the first plants that I loved as a child.  I was convinced they were homes for the Fae. Lily of the Valley does wonderful in the shade.  I often find it growing around trees in the woods where I live.

Ferns – Ferns also thrive in the shade. They are quite common in the woods here in New England.  We have a large area at the back of our property in the trees that we have a beautiful area where they grow.  There’s something about them that has always felt magickal to me.

These are a few of the successful plants that we have growing in the shady areas of our yard.  You can mix and match them to make some really pretty areas in your yard.

I hope that you have an amazing day!

Much Love and Many Blessings,

Jasmeine Moonsong
