A couple of months ago, I was introduced to a new outdoor hobby that I love, geocaching! It’s so much fun! I have spent many happy hours in the last couple of months looking for these little treasures, like the box you see in the picture above, in so many different places. It’s incredibly easy to get into. You just need a phone with a Geocaching app! We also have a bag that has a pen and some fun trinkets to leave in the boxes. I’ll get into that in a bit.
The first thing that you want is the app that corresponds to the website geocaching.com. You can search for geocaching in your app store, and it should be the first one that comes up. You can verify that the logo matches the website that I just gave you.
When you get the app, it will give you a map of caches that you can go and find in your area. Each one of those green boxes is a cache that you can go and find. If you notice, I have a bunch of them in a very distinct line. For those of you who have been with me for a while, you may remember me talking about my favorite place to walk near me, the rail trail. We have access to miles of it in Massachusetts and Connecticut, where I live. That line of caches is on that trail. It’s so much fun.
When you tap one of those boxes, you get a screen like the one above. It tells you the name of the box, the date it was placed, and its description. There’s also a place for a hint and comments from people who have found it in case you need help. Once you find it, you can mark it completed in the app, and the icon will turn a different color to let you know that you’ve done it.
You will find them everywhere! We did this cache on a colder day. We found this one at the base of a light pole in a parking lot. Usually, there’s a slip of paper in it to sign, and sometimes little trinkets in there, depending on the size.
The picture above gives you a closer look at the one I just showed you. It’s in a magnetic key box and the base of the light lifted up a smidge to reveal it. 🙂 They aren’t always this small!
We found this “small” one in the park near my house. It’s filled with all sorts of goodies. Please note that this one was considered small! We are guessing that it would hold about two gallons. It’s the biggest one we have found so far and it really makes me curious how big the large ones are!
This was one of my favorite ones hidden in an old tree in the woods. Unfortunately, the animals loved it too, and they chewed a hole in the side and tried to make off with the pencil for the list!
We have a bag that we take with us that has some trinkets and a pen. You can leave anything in the boxes. We see all sorts of things, like stickers, pins, and bracelets. Please note that you don’t have to leave anything either. You can just sign the list and check it off as done.
I wanted to share it with you because it’s so much fun to do outside. We are having a blast with it, and it quickly became our favorite activity when we have time off.
Have an amazingly magickal day!
Much Love and Many Blessings,
