Merry Meet. My stomach is absolutely growling. I wanted to write you an article on how to make a Yule Log. My first stop was to find a perfect picture. Apparently though, it’s much more common to have any 100 varieties of Yule Logs that are some form of cake. I have never seen so many amazing looking cakes in such a short time.
Today I wanted to give you an overview of how to make the Yule log, an ancient Pagan tradition. It’s done a little bit differently today. Historically the Yule Log was to be gifted to the family or found on the land for the Winter Solstice celebration. They dressed the Yule log up in greenery from where they found it. The next step would be to cover it with cider and flour and set it ablaze. It was also custom to save a piece of the Yule log each year, and light it at the same time as the Yule log from the current year.
Today we are going to talk about making a Yule log that is a bit more modern. This is one you are likely more familiar with as well. You want to find a log that you can work with. You may find that you have luck in the woods with a piece of wood that has already come down. I found a beautiful birch log on a walk the other week. Traditionally oak is used, however you may use a different type of wood if you desire it’s magickal properties. For example, Ash, was quite commonly used and brings us protection, prosperity, and health. Oak brings us healing, wisdom, and strength. Birch is known as the white lady of the woods and brings us energy of healing and renewal.
Once you have your log, you need to flatten the bottom of it. A power saw is probably preferable for this. You want to make it so that it can sit flat on your table without rolling.
Next you want to drill three holes in the log. You want to make the holes appropriate size for the candles you wish to use and evenly spaced. You can use Green, Red, and White candles to represent the Oak King, Holly King, and the Goddess. Once you have your candles all set you can decorate the log any way you wish. We are going to get some evergreen branches and pine cones to set around the base of it.
I’ve also seen them done using Birch wood and all white candles. I love the way that looks as well.
Have a magickal day!
Much Love and Many Blessings,
