Create Your Own Travel or Mini Altar

How many of you are familiar with travel or mini altars? Have you ever seen one? Let’s first start with why you may want something like this.

Altars help you to focus your energy during ritual when working with magick, and they also provide a place for you to honor the Goddess, our deities, and the energy of the Universe.  That being said, it’s not always practical for everyone to have an altar with you.  Some of you may live in a place where you want to hide your spirituality, as you have made the choice not to share your path with others. Some of you may have jobs that keep you away from home. You may also want to go somewhere special for a ritual, like the ocean or the woods, and a mini altar would be amazing to tuck into a small backpack.  These are just a few reasons that you may want a mini altar in your life.  I’m sure many of you can think of more reasons or places to use them.

Ready to build one? Let’s start by looking at what you need. I always tell you that your intention is what’s most important. You can get as formal or informal with these as you want, depending on whether you feel called to do so on your path or what your intentions are for using it.

The first thing you need is a mini tin or box.  One of the best options I’ve found is a tin of Altoids.  I love these because the tin snaps shut when you are done creating it, making it easier to toss into a pocket or a backpack. These tins are the perfect size.  I’ve also seen people use other small boxes with hinges that you can find at different stores.   It really is up to you what you want to use.  Look around for a box that closes and feels like the best size for what you want to do.

Your altar should always reflect your practice and what helps you with your spiritual practice, or what you need to work with energy. I find many of them are based upon what you would have or want on your full-size altar, just done with mini items.

This is a quick example of what an altar may have.  As always, your practice is your practice.  Set your altar up with the things that mean the most and make the most sense to you.

When you look at the things you would put on your altar, look at ways to make them smaller. Big candles can be mini candles or a tealight.  Instead of having a pentacle tile centerpiece, you could use a pentacle that you would find on a necklace.  For a chalice of water, use an abalone shell with water.  For a bowl of charcoal, you can use a charcoal disc.  For a wand, you can use a small stick that you find or something else that you find meaningful.  Have fun with this.

Remember as well that you can decorate the box any way you wish.  If you look up travel wiccan altar or travel witch altar online, you will find so many different ideas.

When you design these, you can have one that you use all the time or make different ones for special occasions. It’s all up to you. Get creative!
