Have you ever had the opportunity to pick up black sand in your hands and just let it run through your fingers? It’s so unbelievably soothing. One day, I would love to sit on a beach with black sand. Apparently, you can find it in some places around the world, like Iceland and the Canary Islands. I know out here I can find pockets of black sand on our beaches. I always love to play in them when I see them.
Black sand is usually caused by mineral-rich sand. I know here in New England when I find it, it’s because those patches of sand are heavy in iron, giving them that color. In some places, like Hawaii, you may find that it’s caused by the lava flow from years gone by. Apparently, black sand is heavy! For those of you from California who are familiar with gold panning, when you pan, the only things that you should find at the end are black sand and gold. I know that on the beaches here, it collects together, and you want to watch it moving along the other sand. If I could bottle that movement and take it home in some way, I would. It’s so peaceful to watch. Next time I go to the beach, I will try to grab a video for you.
When using sand, you will find that it’s naturally grounding. Have you ever spent time sitting in the sand and noticed how you get relaxed? That’s no coincidence. If you are ever stressed and can find your way to a sandy beach, it’s a great place to go. Either spend some time sitting and letting the sand run through your hands or take a barefoot walk. That’s one of my favorite things to do. Black sand amplifies that grounding energy. It can also help to move any energy that you may be carrying that isn’t in your best interest away from you. If you have one of those little home zen gardens and you can use black sand in it, you will find it really helps the energy of that zen garden. You can also keep a tiny bottle on you to help absorb energy when you need it.
You can also use black sand for protection. Similar to how you would sprinkle salt around a place that you wish to protect, you can use black sand. Consider placing a small rock garden with rock sand somewhere on your property to help with protection magick and cleansing energy for your home. If you find yourself needing to do some healing work, black sand is an amazing choice. I already mentioned that it’s naturally grounding and can help with cleansing. Keep a small box or bottle of it in your practice that you can use when you need it to help with healing energy.
