Working with the Coyote as Your Spirit Animal

Growing up in New England I’ve encountered coyotes a few times in my life.  Most often it’s been hearing those barks and yips off in the distance at night or maybe catching the rare sight of one by itself running across the road or the field.

Coyotes are larger than a fox, yet smaller than a wolf and I’ve always thought they look a bit like a mix between the two.   At least here in New England.  Depending on where you are, coyote populations do vary a bit in appearance. They are from the same family as wolves, foxes and dogs which no doubt contributes to the familiar look.  Typically you will only see them during the night.  However during mating season which happens around the end of January into February or sometimes even March you may notice their presence more during this time as they search for mates.  They may be more willing to come out before it is completely dark or you may find them in areas that perhaps they wouldn’t normally be.

They have a really healthy population right now and they definitely are a wild animal that’s been doing pretty well for itself in adapting to the changing world.  They have a huge diet that is incredibly diverse including things like rabbits, fish, even fruits and grasses.  They often get a bad reputation with the farmers as they can go after young animals on a farm. Coyotes tend to stay together in groups. It’s why I mentioned that it was rare to see one on its own.  Usually it’s not really on its own, you might just not see where the others are at that time.

When a coyote crosses your path they are looking to draw your attention to the path that you are currently walking in your life… the risks vs the rewards.  They also want to call to your attention how other people may be playing a part in the direction that your path is headed even when you may not feel their presence.

Risks vs rewards is some pretty big energy that the coyote brings to you.  It helps you to understand when it’s important to take a risk and sometimes they are a great animal to work with if you find yourself needing to take a risk because they can help bring you a nudge in the direction that you want to go.  Coyotes call on you to look at things more closely in your life.  Be sure that things are as you think they are.  It’s a call to verify information and make sure that you aren’t missing something important or being misled in some way. Beware that the coyote may come to you to let you know that you have a trickster on your path or someone that is being less than honest.

They also often bring you energy to help you to have more fun.  Most important is the laughter.  When you laugh you raise your positive energy and that’s helpful for you overall health and well-being.

I hope that you have a magickal day!

Much Love and Many Blessings,
