Blessings of Imbolc!

It is time to celebrate the turning of the Wheel of the Year again. At Imbolc, we celebrate that the Earth is getting ready for Spring to return and the return of our light.  I know some of you are starting to see signs of Spring preparing to return like the first snowdrops coming up through the snow.  Our Spring Equinox and the official return of Spring is next month on March 20th. Right now we can enjoy our days getting longer and I know here in New England we are starting to have some of our warmer weather birds return. Their chirping in the morning is a welcome sign of Spring. I know where I live we are enjoying that the sun is finally setting after 5:00 again.  Some of those winter days can seem quite long when it’s dark before we can get dinner on the table. I’m definitely looking forward to Daylight Savings time on March 12th this year and hoping that they do away with it eventually everywhere so we no longer have days where it’s dark at 4:30 here.

Today we celebrate that energy that is stirring deep inside the Earth as flowers and new life get ready to greet us.   As the Earth prepares for new beginnings so should we.  Start thinking about what you want as you move through the year.  What energetic seeds are you getting ready to plant?  For those of you who have gardens, you may be getting ready to plant some seeds for the Spring now.  I know we are getting ready to plant the seeds for our garden in the next couple of weeks so that we have seedlings ready to go for the garden in April and May.

“New life is stirring beneath the ground,
Mother Earth’s treasures excited to be found

the earthy smell of spring starting to arrive in the air,
with a slightly warmer breeze to gently blow away your cares

Take some time to spend in the warming rays of the sun.
and plant seeds now for what you wish to come”

We are also celebrating our Goddess Brigid today.  What I love about the Goddess Brigid is she is the Goddess of creativity and inspiration.  She encourages you to learn and explore the world around you.  She brings you creative energy to assist you in your life and inspire you.  For those of you who love art or are artists, you will notice that you are drawn to create over the next few days.  Honor that by painting or drawing something this weekend or participating in any other art form of your choice.

In Kildare, Ireland they still celebrate the Goddess Brigid today. The fires dedicated to her were originally attended by nineteen priestesses.  Today they are attended by nineteen nuns.

I found a beautiful spell in an old Llewellyn spell book that I have that I thought would be perfect to share today.

In the spirit of Brigit’s fire, light white, red, or yellow candles to celebrate the return of the light at this time of year. Sing this verse while you light the candles:

Mighty Brigit, goddess of the forge, flying sparks and light,
Mistress who commands the strength
of fire and healing sight.

Patroness of poets, healers, and smiths,
Bring thy blessings and gifts.
Holder who balances the delicate forces
of fire’s birth and death.

Transformation come,
inspiration flow,
Brigit bless all you know.
Element of fire, may you with Brigit’s sacred light always warmly glow.

Priestess of fire and light, open up the forge and let creativity flow.
Visions of magic, muse to bards,
Let the winds of
imagination blow.

Brigit dance in my life and dreams,
The ancient truths reveal.
Share your fires of healing and vibrant health,
And keep my spirit well.

Protectress of mothers and children be,
Always watch over me.
May your fires burn bright in my heart,
And bless each project that I start.

Deep in the earth your wells of inspiration
flow abundant and free.
Come share your overflowing bounty with others and with me.

Mighty Brigit, this I know.
Where your magic is,
So do the wise go.

May I be among your blessed,
Fill my heart and spirit
with all that is best.
