I am loving the enthusiasm from new people looking into starting gardens this year. It’s something that we really enjoy doing each year and I love seeing gardens at various homes when we go out for walks or drives.
This year it’s a bit harder to get things like containers to plant your seeds so I wanted to give you some alternatives as I’ve had a couple of you coming to me asking for ideas. First make sure that you need to start them indoors. There are a lot of varieties of plants that you can direct sow making things much easier. If you need to start them indoors here are some ideas of things that you may have around your home.
Eggshells are honestly the first thing I thought of. You can start your seedlings in eggshells and the best part is that you can plant them with the shell right in your garden. Your garden will love you for it as it enjoys the nutrients found in the shells.
Egg Cartons – How many of you made seedlings in egg cartons in school? If you have egg cartons they are perfect for getting seedlings started. If you have the cardboard ones they are ideal as they are biodegradable.
Citrus Peels – Eating grapefruits, oranges or lemons? Cut them in half and use the peels to start your seeds. They hold their shape as they dry making them a perfect choice.
Yogurt Containers – Give those single serve yogurt containers another purpose. They are a really generous size for young plants. Keep an eye on the water to make sure that you don’t saturate the soil in these. You may want to poke some holes in the bottom to be sure.
Old Milk Jugs – You can cut these to help start seedlings. If you are working with the one gallon jugs you may find that you can start several together. Try to keep them all the same or similar. Be sure to give them enough space so that you can separate them later.
Toilet Paper Rolls – You can use toilet paper rolls by folding them under on the bottom. They are a great size to start seedlings. You can also use paper towel rolls if you cut them down in size.
I hope this helps!
Have an amazingly magickal day!
Much Love and Many Blessings,
