Protect Our Species
Today the world will celebrate our Mother Earth and take part in activities to help her. Earth day is currently celebrated in over 192 countries around the world. Can you imagine how many people that is around the world that will celebrate today and hopefully do some good for our beautiful planet? Did you know that today is officially named Mother Earth Day? I love that name and actually would love to see it used more often as I think it’s even more of a beautiful reminder of just how much our Goddess does for us.
This year the Earth Day Network, who is officially responsible for coordinating Earth Day, has chosen the theme “Protect Our Species.” You can check out the official Earth Day Website here: Earth Day Protect Our Species
On that page you will find several different species and you can explore each one to find out how you can make a difference.
“In nature, nothing exists alone.”
— Rachel Carson, 1962
I was really excited to see the quote that they chose for the page from Rachel Carson. I first learned about Rachel Carson many years ago when I was away for a weekend with my little ones in Maine. We found the most beautiful Wildlife Refuge called the Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge. It’s a beautiful place to walk right along the ocean in Maine. It’s one of my favorite places to visit when we go to Maine. There are so many trails to walk on and just enjoy for hours.
Rachel Carson was an amazing conservationist who really helped with the movement to protect our Earth. She was an extremely talented Marine Biologist who was best known for her book Silent Spring.
“Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring was first published in three serialized excerpts in the New Yorker in June of 1962. The book appeared in September of that year and the outcry that followed its publication forced the banning of DDT and spurred revolutionary changes in the laws affecting our air, land, and water. Carson’s passionate concern for the future of our planet reverberated powerfully throughout the world, and her eloquent book was instrumental in launching the environmental movement. It is without question one of the landmark books of the twentieth century.”
If you would like to learn more about her and her work I have a really good website for you here: Rachel Carson.
