Gardening with Nature

I’ve been gardening for years now and each year I look forward to working in my garden and making it beautiful.  Through the years we have been trying different things and we have found that partnering with nature is the best way to garden.

For instance I have spent the last six years trying to get chocolate mint to take off in my garden.  Last year it did really well.  This year it came back and is taking up a good third of my herb garden.

The entire back patch that you see that is along the stepping stone is all chocolate mint.  Clearly we aren’t going to disturb that and I will plant around it this year.  We have some other plants that came back this year as well like the lavender, oregano and a cola plant.

The chocolate mint is this gorgeous forest green and purple and really is beautiful.

This is our front yard.  There is a bit of a hill that leads down to the road and we made the decision to run huge patches of wildflowers on it this year.  Some of you may remember me showing you some smaller patches last year.  We are expanding this year.  We didn’t plant any of the flowers that you see, they just come up each year around the yard.  We are going to help out this year and put some wildflower mix down.

This is our Magnolia tree.  We use to mulch around it every year.  Now we let Mother Nature choose what is there.  We get a beautiful array of wild mint, green foliage and flowers under the tree that changes as the year goes on.  In August this will be filled with yellow flowers.

Why do we do this? First it’s so much fun to see what Mother Nature brings us.  Often it’s just so beautiful.

Second we adore fireflies so doing this each year has made a significant difference in how many we see each year.  The man next door uses pesticide and you will hardly ever see them in his yard.  Instead of using pesticide we welcome what is coming our way.  For the last month our front yard has been filled with dandelions that I make tea from.

While our yard isn’t a field we try to partner with Mother Nature to bring out the natural beauty around us.  It’s healthier for the wildlife and we love it.    I’ve heard it referred to as “ungardening” and seen some articles on it the past year.

I hope that you have a magickal day!

Much Love and Many Blessings,

Jasmeine Moonsong
