Healthy Witch: Greek Yogurt

Part of our path in life and our personal craft is taking good care of our bodies. Lately I’ve found myself addicted to something healthy and I want to see if I can get some of you addicted as well…. Greek Yogurt! It’s amazing how it went from something that I tried for the first time about a month ago to a daily staple every day.

Greek yogurt is incredibly beneficial to your health.  For those of you who have sensitive stomachs I can’t recommend it enough.  I have awful and I mean awful acid reflux and by having a little bit of this at night before bed I find it cuts it almost in half.  Since I have been eating it daily I almost have it under control allowing me to get off of heartburn medications which is incredible to me.  The reason that your stomach will love this yogurt so much is that it is high in probiotics which increase the health of the bacteria in your gut.  When you improve the good bacteria in your body it can really work to improve your overall health. I noticed a huge huge difference since I started eating it daily.

Greek Yogurt is high in calcium.  I’m also someone who is lactose intolerant so eating this daily really helps me to meet my calcium recommendations.  If you are someone who struggles with lactose issues as well this is a lower lactose food.  

It’s packed with protein which makes you feel full so much longer and has a variety of benefits for your body.  Your body uses protein to help build bones, muscles, skin, hair and more.  It’s basically fueling your body so your body can repair what it needs to.   Protein also provides energy.  It’s not the quick energy that you get with sugar and carbs, it’s long term energy which is why it will help you to feel full longer.  If you are looking to lose weight this will be a huge help.  

My favorite Greek Yogurt is Chobani.  It definitely is the best tasting yogurt that I have ever had. If you are just starting out with Greek Yogurt it’s a great place to begin.   I’ve been working on cutting back sugar wherever I can in my diet so I worked hard to migrate over to plain Greek Yogurt. I’m currently hooked on the plain Greek Yogurt from Costco.  I have to confess it took me a bit to get use to! When it’s plain it’s not as sweet, ok it’s not sweet at all.  After time though it’s one of those things that I crave daily now.  It’s comparable from when I switched from soda to seltzer.  It can take a little bit to get use to.  It’s amazing when you get use to it.

You can use it in a variety of ways as well.  I mix strawberries and other fruits into my plain yogurt some times to give it a little bit of sweetness.  You can use it in place of sour cream.  If you look up Greek Yogurt recipes you will find there are so many creative ways that you can add it to your diet as a healthier alternative.
