What to do with an old tarot deck.
I have been reading with my main deck, the Mystic Dreamer tarot for over fifteen years now. Isn’t that crazy? While I would love it if I was reading with my original deck still, the fact is that tarot cards can get worn with regular use. Really worn if you use them daily as I do!
The other day the Mystic Dreamer tarot went on sale which honestly I rarely ever see and I jumped on it. It just felt right. My current cards I’ve been reading with for around two years I believe and they are definitely worn. I felt guided to start a new deck to work with each day. I have to admit it was a bit startling to shuffle the new cards! So shiny, and new!
I have my old decks still. I keep them in a special chest that I have with some other retired magickal tools, stones and other energy trinkets that I’m perhaps not quite ready to let go of yet but that I’m not using in my daily practice.
I’ve had people ask me what to do with old tarot decks before and I honestly have seen mixed answers through the years. I love to see them go to someone else. I always feel like if they find their way into the hands of another, that’s where they belong. I’m not personally against giving them away or donating them. I would always give them a solid cleansing before passing them on. I’ve given one of my decks away before and was specifically asked not to cleanse the cards so they would retain the energy that I had raised working with them through the years and I happily did that as well. My cards are always handled with love and respect and if they can go on to work with another I love that. I know of people who have buried cards gifting them to the Earth. I also know those who have done ceremonial fires to dispose of the cards. So far I have been the most comfortable with keeping them in a special place or allowing them to go to a new home. I think a lot depends on your relationship with the deck that you are working with and how things make you feel. Trust your intuition.
