I have to confess I have the hardest time remembering the name of this stone! I often refer to it as the sugar stone as it’s how I’ve remembered it. This stone can be a bit harder to find as it’s not as common. What I love about it is that it always looks different when I see it. It always has the most amazing array of purple colors on it. When it’s polished it picks up all those different colors and really is a beautiful stone to look at.
While purple definitely is the more common color to find this stone in you can also find it in yellow, pink, magenta, rose and pretty much every shade of purple that you can think of. Sugilite gets it’s name from the man who discovered it, Ken-ichi Sugi. He was a geologist and found it in Iwaqui Islet Japan in 1944. Sugilite can be found in Japan, South Africa and Canada. The yellow to brown variety is most often found in Japan. Where it gained it’s popularity is the purple variety most often found in South Africa. Most of the beautiful deep purple pieces of sugilite that you find come from deep in the Manganese mines in South Africa.
There’s an example of just one of the beautiful purple varieties that come from those mines.
