How many of you have read “The Witch of Blackbird Pond”? I still remember reading this book for the first time around fourth grade. I absolutely loved it. I grew up here in Massachusetts and I was a huge fan of historical fiction, especially historical fiction that had to do with New England. If it had anything to do with witches it was in my hands.
The Witch of Blackbird Pond was originally published in 1958. It is a book for a younger audience geared for children in grades 5 – 8, however I believe it’s a great read at any age. I think whenever most people read about Witch Hysteria, especially in New England, Salem immediately comes to mind. However this was a problem that extended beyond Salem. Connecticut had a lot of problems with the Hysteria and the Witch of Blackbird does a nice job of giving you a glimpse inside of the Witch Hysteria in Connecticut in the 1600’s.
The story is about a young girl named Kit who moves from the Caribbean to live with her Aunt and Uncle in a Puritan Colony in Connecticut. Kit is a bright girl with a really uplifting spirit and she loves to show her personality. Her outspokenness and love of bright colors is not welcome in the more conservative colony that she’s moved to and she must be careful to tone down her ways so as not to be accused of being a witch. Along the way she meets a Quaker woman who lives on the outskirts of town. This lady is known as the Witch of Blackbird Pond….
I hope you enjoy it!

My 9 year old daughter and I just read this together in October and we both absolutely loved it! Kit’s courageous, witty, compassionate character sends a wonderful message for all. We highly recommend this book too! <3
