Wiccan Creation Myth

The following is an article I wrote about the Wiccan Creation Myth when studying for my first degree many many moons ago. For my studies I was asked to describe the Creation Myth. The lesson detailed Starhawk’s creation myth for those that are familiar with it. When I read through it I honestly had a bit of a hard time grasping it so I went on to do some additional research to gain a better understanding of it.

I read several Wiccan creation myths to find one that settled well with me. The majority of the myths that I read seem to agree that in the beginning their was one, the all, our Goddess. She was in the universe as the earth was not created at this point. Starhawk goes on to describe the Goddess, our Lady as seeing her image reflected in space and she grew to love this image, and the image came to take on it’s own being becoming a second Goddess known as Miria. As the Lady becomes consumed with ecstasy and love she rains down an energy and vibration that creates the world we have come to know. The vibrations become to much for the Goddess Miria and she slowly moves away from the Lady. Her distance leads her to become male and come into being the Lord that we know today.

I must confess, the first thing that jumped out at me when reading these myths was that the myths involved the Lady being first. Being brought up Protestant I was schooled in the Adam and Eve creation myth and I found it interesting to see how that myth had been taken from the Pagan myth and turned about to be man coming first.  After reading several myths I thought Llewellyn’s story was the most beautiful and really had an impact on me.  This one is as follows:

A long time ago the world was in darkness and consisted of nothingness.

From this nothingness, spirit created our Lady.

The lady danced in the heavens. While she danced sparks of light came from her giving birth to the stars and planets. She twirled as she danced and the planets and stars began to move with her in the universe. Her dancing quickened and the oceans and mountains were formed on earth. As she chanted words of joy and love, these words fell to the earth creating the trees and flower.

Her breath created a pure white light creating the colors of the universe giving everything a vibrant beauty of color. Her laughter gave the sounds of the running streams, lappings of the lakes, and roars of the ocean waves. Her tears of joy become the rain.

When she slowed her dancing our Lady wanted a companion to share with all the joy that she had created. Spirit created the Lord as her soul mate. The Lord was made half spirit and half animal so that together the Lord and Lady could populate the planet Earth. The Lord and Lady created angels and power spirits to guide the population. Though they are not always seen they are always with us.

As the population started to grow and become prosperous the Lord and Lady saw a need for healers among them. The Lord and Lady drew the energy from the realm of the angels, power animals and humans, to create the Witches. Witches were given the wisdom of the Lord and Lady, the ability to heal, and the art of magic. They were taught how to talk to the spirits and how to communicate with the energies or earth, air, fire, water and spirit, and how to commune with the animal and plant kingdom.

The myth goes on to explain the history of the witch and how we came to be today. I find this myth very comforting, and as I have learned in my studies to follow my own path and my heart and soul this is the myth that I have taken close to my heart. I respect all the creation myths that I read and I recognize that everyone will find the one that settles best with them on their path. One of my reasons for loving Wicca so much is the ability to learn and discover and choose my own path.

Have a magickal day!

Much Love and Many Blessings,
