The Land Trust

(originally published in Moonsong Daily Magick – October 26, 2020)

There is a road that is connected to my road that we love to drive.  It’s all woods and makes the most beautiful tunnel of trees throughout the varying seasons here in New England.  On that road is a gate that leads into the woods marked private property.  I’ve always wanted to know where it went as it’s a good couple mile stretch of just woods with no houses.

About a year ago they started clearing a lot on the road and Earl and I were upset.  We figured they were going to develop the road out with houses as they’ve done to so many other beautiful areas.  The house never came though.  Instead came a parking lot this Summer with a beautiful trail sign.  We were over the Moon and couldn’t wait to see what this area would hold for us.

We drove by there this week and it was finally open.  We expected to find was a single path in and out that we were hoping would provide a nice walk.  What we found was so much more.

The property is over 220 acres and currently has over three miles of walking trails as of opening day.  We happened to drive by on opening day.  This is a beautiful marsh with the most beautiful new wooden platform with benches for bird watching. I was so amazed with all the views I didn’t take any pictures of all the platforms they made.

The property was originally owned by the Day family in the 1700’s.  That’s the earliest documentation they have.  At least four generations of the days farmed the land.  This is a path coming up to one of the old fields.

The main trail forms a loop and we decided to take the trail that crosses the marsh and goes up the mountain a bit.  The pictures don’t fully capture just how beautiful this place is.

So many different treasured places to stop and watch wildlife.  They put benches in so many wonderful places!

You could just feel the magickal energy of the land and the people who loved it before us.

Some of the trails were recently blazed and some were old roads that others had used before the property was recently donated.

Stones were placed everywhere to help you cross little waterways.  So much love and care was put into this property to make sure it was special for all of us.

As we walked a road that had been there longer than the others we could see that the tree line on each side was the same height.  No doubt where some of the older fields use to be.

A different family purchased all the land from the Day family in the 1930’s.  It was their Summer retreat.  This cabin was their home.  We were so excited when we came upon this.

The trust left some rocking chairs on the porch inviting us to have a seat for awhile and appreciate what simpler times looked like.

This view is the view from the cabin porch.

A small path next to the woods led off the path towards the lake.  This is what we found……
I was so blown away I didn’t take as many pictures here. I borrowed this one from the land trust website so that I could show you how gorgeous it is! 🙂

They fixed up the old dam and waterway.

Another beautiful bridge headed back to the main parking area.  I wish I had a live video of this place. It’s so unbelievably beautiful.

One of the things that I love about living in New England is the old houses and old cemeteries.  Of course this property has one.  I took a picture of the story of the cemetery and wanted to share it as I thought you would be interested in it.

Here is a picture of the cemetery.  They built a fence around it so you can’t get too close to it. I do hope people respect it and don’t damage anything.  You can see the old stones in the small area.

We are just so excited about the new opening of this land trust. It definitely is a place that we will be spending a lot of time moving forward.

I hope you enjoyed the tour!!

Have a magickal day!

Much Love and Many Blessings,

Jasmeine Moonsong
