The Scents of Samhain

For those of you who have been for me for a while, you know that when I talk about Autumn in New England I am always referencing the smells, autumn leaves, crisp air, fresh apples, cinnamon, and so many more. Smells can go an incredibly long way to set a mood and they can do a lot to enhance the energy of the season and your magick.  So what are some great scents to use during the Season of the Witch? These are just a few of my favorites.

Cinnamon – I find a lot of people associate Cinnamon with Yule and I do as well, but for me, this scent always is one of the first ones I pick up in Autumn as the Pumpkin Spice drinks come back, the Cinnamon Apples… Cinnamon brooms and so many more.  It seems like Cinnamon is added to everything this time of year.  It brings some great energy of protection, abundance, and prosperity as well!

Nutmeg – When you bring up Cinnamon you need to follow it with Nutmeg. The two of them are often paired in many favorite Autumn recipes like Apple Pies and Pumpkin Spice. It can help with your intuition, luck, and love.

Cloves – It only makes sense to stay with the spices for a moment.  I think these actually came up in a reading with one of you the other day.  I remember the cloves.  They were something that I didn’t enjoy as much growing up as I thought they had a strong flavor.  They actually are a nice addition to a tea if you pair Cinnamon, Nutmeg, and a bit of Clove.  It’s one of my favorites this time of year. Cloves have some nice Earth energy and are grounding.  They can help to bring you calming energy.  They also are a great protector.

Pumpkin – So does pumpkin really have a smell? 🙂 I know when you ask people they often will think of Cinnamon and Nutmeg.  It does, but it’s quite faint.  However, it can smell amazing if you are making a delicious Baked Samhain Pumpkin like Earl makes for us.  I will share that recipe on a different day with you.

Sandalwood – I honestly prefer it with a bit of Vanilla this time of year.  That for me gives it that nice Samhain energy. If you’ve never tried them together they are really nice.  Vanilla is calming and sandalwood helps you with your intuition.  The pair is great for doing intuitive work.

Licorice – Especially black licorice. Honestly.. now that I think about it I should likely call this Anise as that is what I think a lot of black licorice is flavored with.  It has an incredibly distinct smell. It’s one that I’ve always associated with spirits and paranormal.  Interesting right?

Orange – Pair orange with anything above and I think it enhances that spooky wonderful energy of the season.  It just works right? It also brings some wonderful positive energy to the party. 🙂

Apple – It’s another one that I wanted to include as it pairs so well with all of the others.  I think more of an Apple Cider… it belongs right? 🙂 Of course, it has wonderful spiritual energy to add to any smell that you are working with.

Have an amazingly magickal day!

Much Love and Many Blessings,
