The Magick of Chamomile

The Magick of Chamomile

I was so excited this Spring when I had a ton of volunteer chamomile plants come up all along the side of my herb garden.  Many of you know that my favorite flower is the daisy so it only would make sense that I also love the little flowers that look quite similar to daisies on my chamomile.  I call them volunteer plants as I didn’t plant them where they are they just sort of showed up. With the chamomile it is likely from the chamomile that I had in my herb garden last year that went to seed.  Each Spring we look for our “volunteer plants” around our home and are excited when we find so many different surprises.  Last year some of you may remember that I was excited to find sunflowers popping up in various places.

Chamomile is an annual plant that is native to Southern and Eastern Europe although you will find it’s quite common in other areas of the world as well.   I know it’s doing quite well here in New England.  I have to laugh, it’s had the toughest time every other year, the one year I don’t plant it I have to tie it up as it’s already a good two feet in height.  Chamomile can get to be about 2 feet in height at which point you will often need to give it some help to stay upright.  Did you know you can use Chamomile to help against pests in the vegetable garden?  I think I am going to try to take some of this years plants at the end of the season and place them around the garden perimeter to see if it helps next year.  The flowers it makes will be beautiful around the garden as well.

Many of you have likely heard of chamomile tea right? I can tell you the flowers from fresh chamomile make an amazing tea. It’s an incredibly soothing and relaxing tea especially when paired with lavender.  It is amazing at assisting with anxiety or tension and even can help with depression.Chamomile has an incredibly long history of use for digestive issues. It is believe that it can relax the muscles of the digestive tract.

The bright sunny centers of chamomile are where it gets it’s association with the sun.   Ancient Egyptians attributed Chamomile to their Sun God Ra.  Chamomile can help to cleanse your throat chakra.  Chamomile is wonderful in spell work regarding love, peace and tranquility, and purification.

Have a magickal day!

Much Love and Many  Blessings,
