The Morrigan

The first time I learned about the Morrigan was a long time ago when I was lucky enough to take a class with Christopher Penczak that he did on his book, The Feast of the Morrigan. In that class he took us on guided meditations to get to know this Goddess better and it helped me to form a connection with this Goddess that i still honor to this day.

The Morrigan is an Irish Goddess that is associated with war, death, fate and magic. Many refer to her as the Queen of the Dead, the Great Queen or the Phantom Queen. She is closely associated with the crow and you will frequently see her depicted with a crow or you may see her depicted as a crow. Some of the mythology says that she was a shape shifter who could shift into a crow or a wolf.

In war she watched over those who went to battle. She would encourage them in the fight and help them to find victory in battle. She would fly over their heads as a crow hoping to help encourage them. There are even a few stories where she would join them in battle. She also watched over them in death and was seen as someone who would let them know before they were going to die. When a soldier was going to die they would see a crow as a sign to let them know that they were going to die, or they would see a vision of the Morrigan washing their bloody clothes.

She married her husband, the Dagda, near Samhain. He is called the Great God of Irish mythology. He is known as the Great King of the Tuatha De Danann and is affiliated with life, fertility and agriculture. It is an interesting marriage with the Goddess of Death and the God of Life on Samhain, If you look at their energy and their connection it is in my opinion representative of the beautiful energy that we celebrate at Samhain as well. At Samhain we honor the dead and look to the final harvest and the end of the year. It is a time to work with the Morrigan. As she is married at Samhain we welcome the energy of the the Dagda. It is a time of rebirth and renewal as we celebrate our Witch’s New Year. This powerful duo is perfect to work with during the Season of the Witch and at Samhain.
